Watching History

This picture continues to amaze me. My boys will never know a time in which it was not possible for a person of a different color (or gender) to reach the highest office of our country. The irony, and beauty, is their oblivion to the significance of history happening as they played in the living room. It is my greatest prayer that they will become men of God who live out their faith through their actions. That people will know they love God because of the way they love others, especially those whom society ignores and mistreats. It is my prayer that they will live in world where people show more compassion and care for their neighbors and this planet. This morning, despite my sometimes constant cynicism, it seemed like that world was possible.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from President Obama's inauguration address:

"In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted - for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame.
