The boys have never had a huge excess of clothes once they grew out of the infant stage. There are many reasons for this, but in general we have been able to keep the amount of clothing the boys have under control. Except for pajamas, where the heck do all those pajamas come from?!
A few weeks ago I had started the process of getting out fall/winter clothes in order to see what we had and if there was anything that was still needed. I felt pretty proud that Nathaniel's cold weather wardrobe was complete, yet pretty spare. Nothing extra, just what was needed. Then Aaron brought home a gigantic storage container full of hand-me-downs from a coworker. Oh my goodness! I am pretty sure the container contained 2 complete wardrobes worth of nice, brand name clothing in Nathaniel's size.
So then the minimizing rubber had to meet the road. We had way too many clothes. An absolute embarrassment of riches. And yet I wanted to hold on to them. Truly. My usually minimal loving self just wanted to hang on to 3 wardrobes worth of clothes because they were all so cute and fun and nice. I knew Nathaniel wouldn't wear all of them. I knew that we didn't have room to store them. I knew that they were free so getting rid of them wouldn't cost me anything. I knew that there were people I knew who could also benefit from getting some of these clothes. But for a few days I just couldn't let go.
Finally I had a thought. I would combine all the clothes (what we had and the hand-me-downs) and create a simple wardrobe for Nathaniel by pulling out the items that matched and were in good condition. That way, he can dress himself every day and still look nice. Our favorite hand-me-down item was a navy vest with bright trim in different colors (see top of picture). It is colorful and fun and in our climate will get a lot of wear. I decided to base the wardrobe around that. Here is what we ended up with:
- 7 long sleeved t-shirts (all in same color family, all matching the vest)
- 2 button down shirts, 2 sweater vests (all can mix and match)
- 4 pair athletic type pants (matching all the t-shirts)
- 2 pair jeans (one nice, one play)
- 3 pair dressier pants
- 2 thicker type sweater/rugby shirts
- 4 pieces of outer wear (vest, corduroy jacket, fleece jacket, rain jacket)
That is a total of 26 items. And I still kind of feel like it is too much. But, we are going to go leave it like it is for right now. I can always give away more items later if I feel like they are not being worn.
Minimizing doesn't have to be drudgery! In this case I had so much fun taking the excess and creating a fun, attractive wardrobe that is simple and easy to maintain. I also have the great feeling of being able to pass on a huge bag of clothes to a friend to use!
A note on pajamas: We downsized from about 10 sets to 5. Nathaniel did that himself, choosing the ones he wanted. I feel like I can breathe again. Seriously, where do all the pajamas come from?
